Fabio Silva scored a dramatic late equaliser as Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich drew 2-2 in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena. Silva came off the bench to level in the 89th minute, after Harry Kane had missed a penalty earlier in the second half.
This was Kane’s first appearance since his Ballon d’Or win, and Munich honoured him before kick-off, with him making his entrance separately from the other players. The game then turned into a difficult night for him after the break.
Konrad Laimer had given Bayern the lead in the 38th minute. Kane then saw his penalty strike the crossbar, and Serhou Guirassy levelled for Dortmund in the 60th minute after the Bayern striker had been dispossessed in the build-up. Kane had also turned provider, with his assist setting up Dayot Upamecano, who restored Bayern’s lead in the 66th minute.
Silva’s intervention proved decisive. He struck in the 89th minute to bring Niko Kovac’s side level, and although Lennart Karl hit the crossbar with the last kick of the game, Dortmund held on. They remain level on points with Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga table.
Jobe Bellingham appeared to open the scoring for Dortmund after a mix-up involving Upamecano, but the goal was ruled out. A VAR check showed Carney Chukwuemeka colliding with the goalkeeper as Bellingham swept the ball home.
Bayern, who came into the match averaging over five goals per home game this season, took the lead almost immediately after the first goal was disallowed. Michael Olise, who had earlier struck the frame of the goal, sent Laimer through on goal, and the Austrian finished at the second attempt.
Dortmund’s equaliser came as a shock given Bayern’s dominance, but Guirassy’s neat work created the chance that left Kane under pressure. Kane then rescued himself somewhat with the assist for Upamecano, but Silva’s late strike ensured it was a night to forget for Bayern’s No 9.
Bayern face a demanding period with a crowded schedule. Head coach Vincent Kompany is recovering, and the injury list is growing. Luis Diaz is already out, while Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry went off injured in the first half. Bayern will be pleased to have kept their unbeaten record intact, but they missed a chance to open a gap on their great rivals. Silva’s goal, helped by Kane’s uncharacteristic profligacy, means the two sides’ records remain identical.
