Michael Olise received a second yellow card in the Champions League on Tuesday, earning a red card and a one-match ban that will rule him out of Bayern Munich’s next match against Arsenal.
Olise was shown his first yellow card for a tactical foul that prevented a counter-attack by Viking. While the referee was still displaying the booking, the Bayern forward tossed the ball he was holding at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic‘s head. That prompted a second caution within seconds, to cheers from the Norwegian home crowd. It was the France international’s first career sending-off in a senior game.
The dismissal changed the game. Bayern led 3-2 at the time, but the numerical advantage helped Viking fight back. Tripic crossed for Herman Haugen, who headed in a 90th-minute equaliser to salvage a 3-3 draw.
Kane Reacts
Harry Kane predicted that Olise would be disappointed to miss the coming fixtures. “He’ll have to take responsibility obviously, he’ll have to learn from it,” Kane said after the game. “It’s a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now and he’s going to be gutted to miss those games. But this is football. Sometimes mistakes can happen, it’s life.”
Bayern had trailed 2-0 before producing a comeback through two second-half goals in quick succession, with Kane among the scorers. He has now scored in nine consecutive Champions League games. Luis Díaz had given Bayern the lead with a third goal just before Olise was sent off.
The draw interrupts Bayern’s momentum after they opened their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 win over another Norwegian side, Bodø/Glimt, last month. Kane felt his side deserved more from this encounter. “We should have won the game with the second-half performance,” he added. “You take the point and you move on.”
